Banned Books Week 2020, 1984

“We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness.” ~George Orwell, 1984

1984 was originally published in 1949, written by the famous author George Orwell. This book pushed boundaries and questioned the government and societal systems, which was a common theme in Orwell’s works. The reason for this novel becoming banned and challenged throughout many institutions was because of its political stances and viewpoints as well as adult content taking place within a dystopian backdrop.

This book speaks on tyranny, societal boundaries, and the lack of privacy that so many say is our right. In recent years, people have begun saying that this book was in itself a prophecy of sorts, and merely unleashed the facts that were stated within the novel. I won’t get too into it, but if you read the book you might find some interesting similarities that coincide with modern day. This is definitely an in depth read, and by the first few chapters you’ll already be able to tell why it was so controversial. On a side note and fun fact, the band Muse wrote and based their album ‘The Resistance’ off the popular novel. The album was released in the fall of 2009, and brought along with it a wave of new readers and admirers of the literary work.

To end this segment, I’ll leave you with a second quote from this story to get a taste of what it entails if you haven’t read it already, or if perhaps you haven’t read it in a long while.

“Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.”

Thanks for reading!
